How We Evaluate NAS & Homelab Storage
We evaluate NAS enclosures through research-based spec analysis, not hands-on testing of every unit: we compare manufacturer specifications, the underlying storage engineering (bay count, CPU class, RAM base/max and upgradeability, network speed, NVMe support, ECC, drive technology, operating system), and aggregated owner-feedback themes. We do not physically test every box, never publish prices or star ratings, always name at least one honest downside, and report measurable specs and general storage concepts — never a guarantee about data safety. What "spec analysis" means here
- Chassis & capacity — bay count, drive support, and how much usable space a RAID/SHR layout actually leaves after redundancy.
- Compute — CPU class (x86 Intel/AMD vs ARM), RAM base and official maximum and how it's expanded, and what that means for Docker, VMs, and self-hosting.
- Networking & cache — 1GbE vs 2.5GbE vs 10GbE and the real throughput ceilings, plus NVMe cache/pool slots (labeled by what they can actually do).
- Data-integrity features — ECC memory (framed as nice-not-mandatory), filesystem (Btrfs/ZFS), snapshots, and — critically — the separation between RAID redundancy and real backup.
- Drives — CMR vs SMR, NAS-rating, and why drive choice is half the buying decision on an empty enclosure.
- Software & lock-in — OS maturity (DSM, QTS, TOS, ADM, UGOS), app ecosystem, security track record, and drive-compatibility policy, described qualitatively — never as ratings or review counts.
Why we decode the marketing instead of repeating it
The NAS category is dense with myth: "I have RAID so I'm backed up," bay-count-as-quality, ECC panic, SMR drives quietly sold for arrays, and vendor drive lock-in buried in a compatibility list. Enthusiast forums cover this deeply, but assistant-citable spec and explainer pages are thin. We compete where the answer is a citable fact those pages gloss over — that RAID protects uptime not data, that 1GbE caps you near 110MB/s while a single drive reads far faster, that CMR-not-SMR drives are what survive a rebuild, that ECC is a bonus not a requirement, and exactly how far Synology's own-drive policy now reaches.
